Key materials and formulation examples to optimise polyaspartic coatings

Polyaspartic coatings are fast-curing, high-performance two-component polyurethane (2K PUR) systems widely used in industrial, flooring, and protective applications. Originally developed to reduce VOC emissions, they provide rapid drying, excellent mechanical durability, and chemical resistance. Their reaction between aliphatic polyisocyanates and polyaspartic esters allows for high-solid, low-viscosity formulations with superior UV stability and flexibility.

Polyaspartic coatings offer a balance of rapid curing, durability, and low VOC emissions. By selecting the right raw materials and formulation techniques, their performance and workability can be maximized.

Benefits:

We discovered the following formulation approaches will help to enhance polyaspartic coatings performance:

  • Moisture Management: Apply vacuum or molecular sieve powder to reduce water content and extend working time.
  • Reactivity Control: Adjust the NCO/NH ratio and over-index polyisocyanates for optimal curing and mechanical properties.
  • Application Optimisation: Blend Component B (polyisocyanate) into Component A (polyaspartic ester) carefully, apply by spray and roller, and use fast-drying polyisocyanates for quicker processing.

Key materials:

  • Polyaspartic Resins: Offer varying reactivity, viscosity, and flexibility, ensuring light stability and extended pot life.
  • Polyisocyanate Crosslinkers: Enhance UV resistance, durability, and adhesion.
  • Additives Mix: Combining wetting and dispersing agents for pigment stabilisation, rheology modifiers for sag resistance, defoamers to prevent surface defects, and moisture scavengers to extend pot life.
